Movie tickets reach record high price

WASHINGTON – It’s shaping up to be another blockbuster summer at the movies, but it’s not necessarily because more people are filling those empty seats in the multiplex.

The National Association of Theater Owners says the average price of a movie ticket has reached an average $8.12. That beats the old record of $8.06 set around this time last year.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a matinee under $9 in the D.C. area.

A big reason for the rise — 3D and IMAX. Those special formats come with special fees. Maybe enough to make you skip the big tub of popcorn — or try to sneak in a box of candy.

The Wrap reports the average ticket price should drop this fall, when Hollywood enters awards mode and dials back on the fancy projection.
