WASHINGTON – Hundreds of Verizon customers are still without landline phones and Internet service in Northern Virginia as the company continues to work on large communication cables that were severely damaged.
At its height, 1,100 customers were out of service because of the outage. Verizon FIOS customers are not affected.
As of 7 p.m. Monday, Verizon had restored service to about 400 customers.
Repair crews are working around the clock to restore service, the company says in a news release. But Verizon warns it could be days before all of the affected customers can make a phone call or get online.
Nighttime construction work in the area of Gallows Road and Lee Highway severely damaged three large copper communication cables and the ducts that carry the cables, Verizon says.
The repairs involve digging up the damaged area, rebuilding the damaged ducts, removing and replacing the damaged cables and then splicing the new cables to restore service.
The Virginia Department of Transportation expected Verizon crews to be near the intersection of Gallows Road and Lee Highway in Falls Church working on the cables.
