Commuter Idle to meet with Secretary of State

WASHINGTON – WTOP’s Commuter Idle winner Brenda Wells has drawn the attention of America’s top diplomat and will meet with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Monday.

Wells, who was crowned WTOP’s Commuter Idle for her horrendous trip to work, will have her picture taken with Clinton.

“[It’s] absolutely exciting,” Wells says.

Wells is thrilled. But, to merely say she’s excited would be an understatement.

“Yes, I’m nervous. I think I’m really nervous right now.”

Wells is the Baltimore County woman who drives from her Sparrows Point home to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, then takes a MARC Train to Metrorail and changes rail lines, then walks a block to catch a bus to the office.

Wells works in the State Department’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security.

She says she received an internal email soon after winning WTOP’s Commuter Idle contest. The email asked her if she was interested in a photo with Clinton.

“And I thought are they kidding? Am I interested?”

The answer is of course.

Wells says her first question when invited was whether she could bring her kids, thinking it would be a “fabulous opportunity for them.”

Wells also is bringing parents with her. She’s delighted they’ll be there.

“My parents are such a big part of this whole equation because they care for my kids while I’m doing the whole commute and working and everything.”

After receiving the initial email invitation Wells wondered whether the event would be canceled.

“I’ve been waiting. And you know how busy she [Clinton] is…this is obviously very big for me, I’m sure it’s very small in her agenda. But – very exciting!”

WTOP also is invited to attend.
