Teen stabbing near Howard Theatre was hate crime

WASHINGTON – Three adults are charged with assault with a dangerous weapon in the stabbing of a 16-year-old boy Tuesday night near Howard Theater. The incident is now being investigated as a hate crime.

Metropolitan Police say the teen was walking down the 600 block of T Street in Northwest around 8:40 p.m. when a woman started yelling homophobic slurs at him.

Then, police say, the situation escalated quickly and someone pulled a knife, stabbing the boy multiple times.

A 19-year-old man, 33-year-old man and 25-year old woman are charged in this case. The victim is in stable condition.

The theater issued a statement saying the stabbing apparently happened at a construction site that is not affiliated with the theater. Howard Theater officials say it did not involve any patrons or anyone connected to the theater.
