Should companies ban workers from talking on cellphones while driving?

WASHINGTON – The chances are pretty good that you do or have used your cellphone for some sort of business matter while driving. But should your company allow that?

The National Safety Council says when it comes to work-related activities, a growing number of companies are putting full cellphone bans in place for employees behind the wheel.

One company, Owens Corning, recently banned all work-related communications behind the wheel.

“I think we learned that the world doesn’t end on one phone call,” Doug Pontsler, an Owens Corning vice president, tells The New York Times.

Of course, the National Transportation Safety Board has recommended a full ban on the use of personal electronic devices behind the wheel.

“There’s a lot of research out there that shows, talking on the phone or texting — hand held, or hands free — all are distracting and they are added risks for drivers behind the wheel,” says NTSB Chair Debbie Hersman.
