WASHINGTON – Trayvon Martin’s parents are reacting to news that the man who shot their son is being charged.
The news of George Zimmerman’s arrest came during their visit to D.C.
“First of all I want to say thank God,” Martin’s mother Sybrina Fulton said at a press conference at the D.C. Convention Center. “We simply wanted an arrest. We wanted nothing more, nothing less. We just wanted an arrest, and we got it. And I say, ‘Thank you.’ Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Jesus.”
She also made a point of thanking those who have supported the family.
“The heart has no color. It’s not black, it’s not white. It’s red, and I want to say thank you from my heart to your heart,” Fulton says.
Tracy Martin is Trayvon Martin’s father. “We’ve got a long way to go, and we have faith,” he says.
Sybrina Fulton was asked if she is satisfied with the charge of second-degree murder.
“We just have faith and hope in Miss Corey’s office that they are professionals and they’ll do the right thing. They took a look at the evidence and they decided that was the charge,” says Fulton. “We’re not the experts, they are the experts so we’re putting our faith in them.”
The press conference was organized by Rev. Al Sharpton, who has helped bring national attention to the death of 17-year-old Martin.
Sharpton’s National Action Network is holding its 14th annual national convention at the D.C. Convention Center through Saturday.
“We will not be gloating around here,” Sharpton said after the charge was announced. “We are still mourning with this family.”
