WTOP vice president to receive freedom of speech award

WASHINGTON – WTOP’s vice president of news and programming, Jim Farley, has been named the recipient of a top non-partisan journalism honor.

The editorial board of Talkers, a leading publication serving the talk radio industry, announced that Farley will receive its 2012 Freedom of Speech Award. The accolade is presented annually to media figures whose work demonstrates First Amendment principles.

“I am thrilled on behalf of the men and women in the WTOP Newsroom whose hard work is protected by the First Amendment,” says Farley. “They do all the heavy lifting and I get credit for THEIR hard work.”

Talkers founder Michael Harrison says radio journalism is experiencing a rebirth on airwaves and digital platforms, according to a release.

“The First Amendment is alive and well at WTOP,” Harrison says. “Jim Farley is a remarkable broadcaster.”

Farley joined WTOP in 1996 after eight years with ABC News and 13 years at NBC. He has also taught journalism courses at NYU and Fordham University.

The award will be presented to Farley at the New Media Seminar in New York City in June.

More information about the award as well as a video interview with Farley is available at online at talkers.com.
