Va. man killed while helping truck back out of parking lot

WASHINGTON – A 69-year-old man was killed after being hit by a car while helping a tractor-trailer back out of a parking lot, Reston police say.

Basil Knick of Mineral was flown to a local hospital and later pronounced dead.

The driver of the striking vehicle, 59-year-old Darryl Barnes of Sterling, told authorities he did not see Knick step out into the street.

He has been charged with failing to pay full time and attention.

Officials say neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in the accident, which happened in the 2500 block of Fox Mill Road.
