Doc Popcorn opens first D.C.-area location

WASHINGTON – Remember Doc Popcorn? The Boulder, Colo.-based franchise, which peddles popcorn in such flavors as “hoppin’ jalapeno” and “sinfully cinnamon,” has opened its first Washington-area outpost at Potomac Mills in Woodbridge. The company started looking in the region early last year.

Franchise owner Tong Zheng has invested about $130,000 to open a 160-square-foot kiosk selling the company’s nine varieties of popcorn. He has signed an agreement to open a total of three outposts, all of which he hopes to keep in Northern Virginia.

Zheng isn’t a stranger to the restaurant business; he previously owned and ran Hunan Gourmet in Manassas but sold it to concentrate on Doc Popcorn.

Although no leases are signed, Zheng would like to get his next Doc Popcorn operational by April and another by year’s end. He is considering traditional stores as well as kiosks. As for his favorite Doc Popcorn flavor? Triple white cheddar, he says.
