WASHINGTON – Should you get a fresh or a frozen turkey? You might guess fresh is fresher, but “What’s Cooking America” says in many cases frozen turkeys can be the better option.
Some food experts say fresh turkeys have been sitting around for days. They are butchered, processed, trucked to the store and then stocked.
Frozen turkeys are flash frozen right after they are butchered, so they are actually fresher.
However, others say fresh birds have their advantages. Free-range turkeys have access to the great outdoors, and environmental factors give fresh turkeys a wilder taste.
If you get a fresh turkey, it can usually can be kept in the refrigerator for one to two days.
Your frozen turkey will need to be thawed in the refrigerator, and you’ll need about two days for every 10 pounds.
