Beltway, I-70, I-95 rank among most unreliable roads list

WASHINGTON – Three corridors that you drive on a daily basis have a distinction that further confirms how bad the region’s traffic is. They rank among the nation’s top 40 reliably unreliable corridors.

Texas Transportation Institute and traffic tracking company INRIX put together the first-of-its-kind rankings.

Here are the corridors that make the list, based on 2010 data:

  • Interstate 70 westbound between Md. Route 144 and U.S. Route 15 in Frederick (11th most unreliable)
  • Interstate 95 southbound between I-395 and Russell Road (15th most unreliable)
  • The Inner Loop of the Beltway (I-95/495) between Springfield and New Hampshire Avenue — (27th most unreliable corridor)

Two corridors in Atlanta and two in New York are in the top five

At No. 5 is the Hampton Roads Beltway/I-64 Norfolk from Rip Rap Road to the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel.

When it comes to reliability, the report says the following:

A predictable transportation system is important to motorists and goods movers. Reliability describes the extra time you add to a trip to ensure you will be on time. Reliability is important if you have to be on time for work, to catch an airplane, to pick up a child at daycare, to ensure just-in-time deliveries are made-any trip when you simply can’t be late.

As well as the unreliable corridors, the study also lists the Outer Loop of the Capital Beltway between U.S. Route 1 and Georgia Avenue in Maryland as the third slowest stretch of road in the country during the morning rush.

As far as specific solutions to address these congested corridors, the study doesn’t make any direct recommendations. Rather, the study says each region “must identify the projects, programs and policies that achieve goals, solve problems and capitalize on opportunities.”
