Ed Sheeran tells fans he’s signing off social media

WASHINGTON — Award-winning singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran says he’s “taking a break” from social media, to experience life a bit more.

As he wrapped up his world tour supporting his 2014 album “X,” Sheeran alerted his 16 million Twitter followers and 5 million Instagram fans they wouldn’t hear from him socially, for a while.

“I’m taking a break from my phone, emails and all social media for a while,” Sheeran posted on Instagram Saturday. “I’ve had such an amazing ride over the last 5 years but I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes.”

Sheeran’s posting suggests the 24-year-old feels he hasn’t fully taken in the fruits of his success. Sheeran’s first album debuted in 2011.

Forbes listed Sheeran’s earnings at $57 million for the last year.

“I’m taking this opportunity of me not having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I missed,” Sheeran posted.

Sheeran apologized in advance to his family and friends for being less accessible for the time being: “If you love me you will understand me buggering off for a bit.”

To his fans, Sheeran promised “the 3rd album is on its way and is the best thing I have made thus far.”

According to Rolling Stone, Sheeran will likely be seen at the 58th annual Grammy Awards on Feb. 15, where his “Thinking Out Loud” is nominated for both Song of the Year and Record of the Year, as well as Best Pop Solo Performance.

Sheeran will also have an operation to repair a broken eardrum, which he sustained while jumping off a yacht.

Sheeran hints he will eventually be back on social media: “See you all next autumn, and thank you for being amazing.”
