WASHINGTON — August unemployment rates rose in both the D.C. and Baltimore metro areas in August, despite a drop in jobless rates in most cities last month.
The Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the unemployment rate in the D.C. region was 4 percent last month, up from 3.9 percent in July, but still lower than the 4.4 percent unemployment rate in August 2015.
In Baltimore, the August unemployment rate was 4.8 percent, up from 4.7 percent, but also well below Baltimore’s unemployment rate of 5.5 percent one year ago.
Unemployment rates fell in 242 of the nation’s 387 metropolitan areas.
Among metro areas with a population of 1 million or more, Denver and Salt Lake City tied for the lowest August unemployment rate, at just 3.2 percent. San Bernardino, California, had the highest, at 6.6 percent.
Among all metro areas, Yuma, Arizona, retained the title of the worst with an August unemployment rate of 24.6 percent. Sioux Falls, South Dakota, still has the nation’s lowest unemployment rate, at just 2.1 percent last month.
