Iron Mountain plans $350M Manassas data center

WASHINGTON — Boston-based Iron Mountain, Inc. will build a $350 million data center in Manassas, Virginia, and create about 50 high paying jobs in the process.

Iron Mountain Information Management LLC, a subsidiary of Iron Mountain, Inc., says it will develop the data center over a period of several years with partners.

The state-of-the-art data center facilities will be marketed to corporate, government and technology customers.

It will be Iron Mountain’s first data center in Northern Virginia, considered the data center capital of the nation.

Northern Virginia passed the New Jersey-New York region as the largest data center market in the U.S., according to JLL.

The region now accounts for nearly 20 percent of the market share in enterprise demand, with 7.3 million square feet of data center space in use in Northern Virginia and another 1 million square feet in the works.

Iron Mountain will create 25 highly skilled jobs and expects another 25 tenant positions, all at an average salary of $100,000 a year.

Iron Mountain Information Management will get $500,000 in water and sewer availability fee credits as an incentive from Prince William County’s Industrial Development Authority.

Iron Mountain says it chose the Manassas location, at 11650 Hayden Road, because of abundant fiber and power. The site is a short distance from a new power substation and switching station.

When complete, Iron Mountain’s Manassas data center will include three buildings totaling 375,000 square feet.

Iron Mountain’s real estate portfolio includes more than 69 million square feet and more than 1,1000 facilities in 37 countries.
