ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — County Executive Steve Schuh is asking the Anne Arundel Board of Education to reconsider allowing transgender students to use bathrooms of their gender identity.
Media outlets report that last week, the school system sent a set of guidelines to school administrators stating that students should be allowed to use bathrooms of their gender identity. It also said students on field trips should be allowed to sleep in the common space of their gender identity.
Schuh wrote in a letter to the school board that the guidelines infringed on the rights of students who might be uncomfortable sharing bathrooms with transgender students.
He recommends that transgender students use private bathrooms and lodgings.
School board president Stacy Korbelak said the board will likely wait to draft a policy on transgender students until the law is clear.
