Hermine leaves behind rip current threat in Ocean City

WASHINGTON — The worst weather conditions from Hermine have passed, but the storm has left behind the threat of deadly rip currents at beaches along the East Coast including in Ocean City, Maryland.

“Rip currents are caused when water coming into the beach has to make its way back out,” said Ocean City Beach Patrol Captain Butch Arbin.

“This coming week we’re going to have incredible weather, but the rip current threat is going to be worse than it was,” he said.

Lifeguards at Ocean City say there were some extremely rocky conditions caused by Hermine over the weekend. There were strong winds and 12-foot waves crashing into each other repeatedly.

“It looked like a washing machine,” Arbin said. “Most people looking at that from the beach said, ‘I don’t even want to be out there’.”

On Monday, lifeguards continued to restrict swimming, telling swimmers they should only go up to knee-deep water, Arbin said.

The same restriction was in place on Sunday, an upgrade from Saturday when no swimming was allowed.

There were no serious injuries reported from the storm conditions.
