Police: Son set fire to home in 2011, killing his mother, 90

HALETHORPE, Md. (AP) — A Baltimore-area man has been accused of starting a fire that killed his 90-year-old mother nearly four years ago.

Baltimore County police say 58-year-old Robert McCann intentionally set fire to his Halethorpe home in August 2011. McCann, who has since moved to Delaware, was arrested by Delaware State Police on Thursday, two weeks after a Baltimore police investigation led to a warrant for his arrest.

When police arrived on the scene in 2011, McCann was sitting in a vehicle in the driveway. He had minor burns and told police that his mother was still inside the home. Edna Marie McCann was declared dead at the scene.

As of Friday, Robert McCann is in Delaware awaiting extradition back to Maryland. Jail records do not indicate if McCann has hired an attorney.
