Icy roads wreak havoc on Maryland roads Sunday

WASHINGTON — Icy roads are wreaking havoc in northeastern Maryland and the greater Baltimore metro area Sunday.

Two major pileups were reported Sunday morning sending multiple people to the hospital with injuries.

Howard County Police say 30 vehicles were involved in an accident on Route 40 eastbound over the Patapsco River Bridge near the Baltimore County line.   That crash closed the road in both directions.

Maryland State Highway Administration spokesman Dave Buck told WTOP there was another pile-up involving 15 to 20 cars eastbound Route 40 near Turf Valley in Ellicott City, just ahead of the I-70 split.

Meanwhile pileups and accidents were also  reported in Pennsylvania and New Jersey along the I-95 corridor and Schuykill Expressway, resulting in the deaths of at least three people.

Officials across the region said they were taken surprise by the icy conditions as forecasts had only called for rain.
