UPDATE: Police told WTOP Sunday that there is no connection between the shootings and the synagogue. The teens had been going to a non-synagogue event held there Saturday evening.
WASHINGTON — Police say two teenagers were shot Saturday in front of the Mishkan Torah Synagogue in Greenbelt, Maryland.
Police say a 19-year-old male and a 16-year-old male were both taken to area hospitals Saturday night after being shot in the street. Both are expected to survive.
Greenbelt City Police say this incident happened around 11:40 p.m. Officers responded to a report of the sound of gunshots in the area of Ridge Road.
The two victims were headed to a party at the synagogue when a fight broke out and shots were fired. Police say the 16-year-old, who lives in from Laurel, Md., suffered a gunshot wound to his shoulder. The teen then called a relative, who arrived at the scene and then transported him to the hospital. The 19-year-old victim, from Lanham, Md., suffered a gunshot wound to his rear torso and ran to the synagogue. He was then transported by ambulance to Prince George’s Hospital Center.
