Virginia trial for Lyon sisters murders delayed

WASHINGTON — The murder trial of the man charged with killing two Montgomery County girls, Sheila and Katherine Lyon has been pushed back until next year.

The trial of Lloyd Lee Welch, 58, had been scheduled to begin Nov. 24, in Bedford County, Virginia.

Welch’s defense attorneys requested, and were granted the delay.

After a Tuesday hearing, prosecutor Randy Krantz said Welch’s defense lawyers are relatively new to the case.

“This is a complicated case, it is a complex case, and the defense counsel has only recently involved, so for fundamental fairness, they need the opportunity to start digesting the evidence that has been amassed in this case,” Krantz told Roanoke, Virginia TV station WDBJ.

Welch’s new trial date is March 15, 2016. He could receive the death penalty, if convicted.

The Lyon sisters were last seen at Wheaton Plaza Mall in March, 1975.

The sisters were walking from their house to the Wheaton Plaza Mall. The girls never came home, and no bodies were found.
