WASHINGTON — Some of the graduates at the Naval Academy graduation later this month will be trying out a new look: a new dress uniform for women.
The prototype has the same high collar as the men’s uniform, The Navy Times reports, along with an improved metal clasp. The chest pockets have been removed, and the buttons are smaller.
About 200 female graduates and six staff members will wear the prototype at the graduation ceremony May 22. After the midshipmen are commissioned, they’ll switch to the combination cap, which looks like the men’s hat but is proportioned to women’s sizes.
The Navy will test the new dress uniform over the summer; the full switch-over could take 12 to 18 months.
