Rey Mysterio talks victory over Kurt Angle, Lucha debut tonight

WASHINGTON — Fresh off of his victory Sunday over wrestling legend Kurt Angle, Rey Mysterio is set to make his debut in Aztec Warfare on Lucha Underground tonight at 8 p.m. EST.

“This is it, man. When you talk about what’s hot, what’s new, what’s different and what’s exciting and fun, it’s Lucha Underground,” Mysterio tells WTOP.

At 41 years old, Mysterio has come quite a long way since making his debut back in 1989 in Mexico at the age of 14. After wrestling in various circuits including ECW and WCW for the beginning portion of his career, Mysterio made his WWE debut in 2002 and began a feud shortly after with Kurt Angle.

Mysterio would go onto wrestle with the company until 2015, his first title coming in 2003 when he defeated Matt Hardy for the Cruiserweight Championship. All and all, between WWE and WCW, Mysterio has captured 21 titles, not to mention winning the prestigious Royal Rumble in 2006.

Rey Mysterio spoke with WTOP about the latest chapter in his life, Lucha Underground, as well as how he keeps his body in shape after he’s been performing high-risk maneuvers for 27 years. He also shares how faith plays a huge role in the day-to-day grind of his wrestling career.
