WASHINGTON — The Maryland man believed to have killed a D.C. family and their housekeeper has gone to Brooklyn, New York, D.C. police say.

Police in New York City are now searching for 34-year-old Daron D. Wint who is charged with the murders of Savvas Savopoulos, his wife Amy, their son Philip and their housekeeper Veralicia Figueroa. The four were found inside the family’s multimillion dollar home on Woodland Drive last Thursday.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier said police searched for Wint at several sites in Prince George’s County during the last 24 hours and that investigators now believe he may have traveled to Brooklyn, New York.

“Right now you have just about every law enforcement officer across the country that is aware of his open warrant and are looking for him,” Lanier said. “Even his family has made pleas for him to turn himself in. I would just reiterate, it’s much easier if he just turns himself in.”

The New York City Police Department is also helping search for Wint, Lanier said.

And police in New York were questioning Wint’s girlfriend, who lives in Brooklyn, NBC 4 reported.

Investigators have also found a connection between Wint and the wealthy Savopoulos family, she said, adding that the killings were not a random crime.

Wint once worked for American Iron Works, the construction materials supply company led by Savvas Savopoulos, Lanier said.

But investigators have not ruled out whether others may have been involved, she said.

Wint was identified as a suspect in the family’s murders through DNA evidence left on a piece of pizza found inside the house, which had also been set on fire.

The fire brought officials to the house May 14 where the four bodies were found on the second floor.

All were killed before the fire was set. Three had been stabbed or bludgeoned.

Lanier also said that investigators believe Wint is the man seen in a video police released earlier this week, when they called that individual a person of interest.

Police describe Wint as a dark-skinned black man. He is about 5-foot-7 and weighs 155 pounds. He was last seen wearing jeans, a blue hooded sweatshirt and white tennis shoes.

He is also known as Steffon Wint.

Anyone with information about Wint’s whereabouts is asked to call police at 202-727-9099 or to send a text to 50411.
