WASHINGTON — The snow is supposed to halt things. When the flakes fall, we’re trained to buy groceries and stay in the house.
No one could blame you for doing that last weekend. After record-setting cold, the D.C. region was hit with blankets of snow, sleet and freezing rain. News outlets — including this one — warned motorists not to drive if it wasn’t an emergency.
Tell that to a Marine, who was slated to be deployed on Sunday and wanted to get married before he left town. According to the Washington Post, the pipes froze at the Virginia venue he and his fiancee booked for Saturday night. His chaplain canceled due to the snow.
The couple had a Virginia marriage license, and they needed a last-minute venue to accommodate them and their guests. The bride’s mother thought the couple should marry in an Arlington County firehouse.
As the Post reports, the couple got a chaplain from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and roughly 25 guests showed up. The service was short, but the couple danced in the firehouse, and the officers lit warning lights for a festive vibe.
“Congratulations to the Marine & his bride married last night at Fire Station 5,” the Arlington County Fire Department posted on Facebook. “Best wishes [to] the newlyweds!”
