Police: Md. man stabbed mom for meds

WASHINGTON — A Brooklyn Park, Maryland, man is accused of stabbing his 60-year-old mother with a steak knife to steal prescription medication.

The woman was attacked at a home on Edgevale Road about 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, police say.

“It appears that the suspect entered his mother’s room in an attempt to take some medication from her,” says Lt. T.J. Smith with Anne Arundel County Police.

Once in the room, the mother told police a struggle took place during which she was punched in the face, then stabbed with a steak knife by her son, 31-year-old Paul J. Tond. Tond then blocked a bedroom door so his mother couldn’t escape.

Once the woman was able to get out, she called 911. Officers surrounded the home and took Tond into custody, Smith says.

An investigation in underway into the attack but Smith says cases involving a person attacking a loved one to feed an addiction is not unheard of.

Smith called it a “wild situation, nonetheless, that a son would actually harm his own mother over trying to get some prescription medications from her,” he said.

The mother was taken to the hospital but is expected to recover. Tond faces a list of charges including assault, robbery, false imprisonment and attempted second-degree murder.
