Parks Looking To Rent Out Unused Buildings

Montgomery Parks (file photo)Asked to find some way to make money off of unused buildings in its parks, Montgomery Parks is looking for potential tenants at a number of its facilities — including one in Bethesda and one in Chevy Chase.

Parks on Wednesday announced it will accept proposals to use the “Park Activity Buildings” located in Maplewood Alta Vista Park (5209 Alta Vista Rd.) and North Chevy Chase Park (4105 Jones Bridge Rd.) for up to five years.

In 2010, the department proposed closing 11 under-utilized buildings in its parks as a possible saving measure. The County Council and Planning Board suggested Parks find other ways to generate revenues from the buildings, which are generally small recreation centers with kitchens, bathrooms and parking spaces.

Parks staff leases five of its 18 Park Activity Buildings out for birthday parties, reunions and other community events. The building in Kensington’s Ken-Gar Palisades Local Park were leased to child care operators but were vacated last year.

The proposal period will be open for 60 days and staff will hold a public meeting on May 14. For more information check out the Parks website.
