Illinois suspends Paul after arrest

URBANA, Ill. (AP) — Suspended University of Illinois basketball player Darius Paul has pleaded guilty to underage drinking.

Paul entered his plea Wednesday in Champaign County Circuit Court. A second charge of resisting a peace office stemming from his April 22 arrest was dropped.

The 20-year-old Paul was sentenced to a year of court supervision.

According to The News-Gazette (http://bit.ly/1iTsVjN ), county State’s Attorney Julia Rietz said Paul had admitted to police that he failed two tests for marijuana use administered by team officials. Illini coach John Groce said Tuesday when he suspended Paul for the 2014-15 season that the sophomore had “multiple transgressions” but did not elaborate.

Paul is the younger brother of former Illini star Brandon Paul.
