Appalachian State overwhelms Troy 53-14

TROY, Ala. (AP) — Marcus Cox ran 16 times for 123 yards and three touchdowns on Saturday and Appalachian State beat Troy 53-14 to earn its first-ever Sun Belt victory.

After building a 26-14 halftime lead, Appalachian State (2-5, 1-2 Sun Belt) scored 27 straight points, ending its four-game losing streak.

The Mountaineers outrushed Troy 441-79 with four different players gaining at least 80 yards on the ground. Ricky Fergerson ran 10 times for 107 yards and Terrence Upshaw added 82 yards rushing.

Taylor Lamb completed 9 of 16 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown, and ran for 98 yards and another score.

Brandon Silvers was 20 of 30 for 156 yards and two interceptions for the Trojans (1-6, 1-2). Brandon Burkes scored on a 5-yard run on Troy’s opening drive and Chandler Worthy returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown midway through the second.
