Western Carolina handles Catawba 35-17

CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Troy Mitchell threw for 223 yards with two touchdowns, and rushed for a third as Western Carolina defeated Division II Catawba College 35-17 on Saturday.

Mitchell threw touchdowns of 44 yards to Spearman Robinson and 56 yards to Willie Police in the first quarter to push the Catamounts (2-1) out to an early 14-0 lead. He scored on a 19-yard keeper to go up 21-10 in the third quarter.

Detrez Newsome ran for a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Mitchell was 16 of 27 for Western Carolina. Robinson finished with three receptions for 72 yards and Police had three for 67.

Mike Sheehan threw for 236 yards on 21-of-36 passing with two touchdowns, but threw two first-half interceptions for the Indians. Gary Williams had 94 yards receiving, including a 20-yard score from Sheehan in the second quarter.
