Jackson State slips past Florida A&M in 22-17 win

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — DeSean McKenzie hauled in the winning touchdown in the final seconds to lift Jackson State to a 22-17 win over Florida A&M in the season opener for both teams Saturday night.

The 60-yard TD pass from LaMontiez Ivy spoiled what would have been a fourth quarter comeback win for Florida A&M, which retook the lead with just 46 seconds to go on a 1-yard touchdown pass from Damien Fleming to Gerald Hearns.

Jackson State put the first points on the board with a 22-yard field goal from Ryan Deising, who also kicked a 20-yarder in the second quarter but trailed 10-6 at halftime. Florida A&M’s Chase Varnadore kicked a 25-yard field goal and Jeff Hall threw a 21-yard TD strike to Damien Fleming.

In the second half, Rakeem Sims punched in a touchdown from the 1 for Jackson State, which got another field goal to open the fourth quarter.
