BALTIMORE (AP) — A Baltimore City Circuit judge has been suspended for behaving in what investigators say was a sarcastic and demeaning manner.
Maryland’s top court handed down a five-day suspension for Judge Lynn Stewart Mays on Tuesday. The order includes an additional 25-day suspension, which will be lifted if Mays has no conduct issues for two years.
Mays’ attorney tells The Daily Record (http://bit.ly/1reuABb ) that the judge has acknowledged that her behavior was inappropriate and says it won’t happen again.
In May 2012, Mays admitted to mocking a defendant in court, asking his fiancee, “Where’s the ring?” and telling the woman to sit down and shut her mouth.
Mays also admitted to telling a defense attorney to stop arguing with her, telling the attorney she would lose because Mays is the judge.
