Good to Go: Kick-off Halloween and Thanksgiving festivities with healthy treats

WASHINGTON – Before you head out the door to trick-or-treat or go to that Halloween party, you and the kids can prepare some healthier, festive snacks to offset the calories from looming stockpiles of candy.

Popular online pin boards offer some light, energy-inducing treats.

Banana ghosts and clementine pumpkins from Postris.com will likely be a hit with the kids.

How to prepare:

  • Peel both the bananas and clementines
  • Slice the bananas into halves
  • Add chocolate chips or raisins to make a ghost face
  • Add a small piece of celery in the middle of the clementine for the pumpkin stalk

As soon as the Halloween decorations come down, the spotlight will be back on eating as Thanksgiving approaches.

And one thing is for sure — the kids will want to gobble, gobble this fruity turkey up. Spoonful.com features this great treat throughout November. It also might work as a Thanksgiving dinner appetizer for your younger guests.

Here’s what you will need:

  • Cut pears in half for the turkey base
  • Slice apple and peel orange slices for the colorful feathers
  • Raisins and carrots can decorate the face
  • Caramel dip on the side is optional but will likely be most appreciated

It’s hard to avoid the added calories of the holidays, but at least there are healthy and festive alternatives.
