WASHINGTON – Two Arlington-area water main breaks are causing delays for drivers as water pours onto the road Tuesday morning.

One water main break is blocking all lanes of South Arlington Mill Drive between South Taylor Street and South Randolph Street in Shirlington. The break occurred at about 4 a.m. A second water main break is blocking South Monroe Street between 24th and 25th streets.

Abingdon Elementary School, 3035 S. Abingdon St. in Arlington, is closed because of the breaks.

Tuesday’s water main breaks come after two other water main breaks in the area Monday. One was in Northeast D.C., where DC Water says a 12-inch main burst on Bladensburg Road near Benning Road. No homes were affected, but Hechinger’s Mall did not have water for several hours.

Monday’s other water main break occurred on Gold Kettle Drive in Gaithersburg, Md. Several Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission customers were without water for several hours.

There is a relationship between water temperature and breaks, according to WSSC. A sudden drop in temperatures can cause “shock” in the pipes, according to the WSSC website.

Authorities have not yet said what caused the water main breaks in Arlington. Below is a map with the location of the breaks.
