WASHINGTON — Google tops the list of 25 companies offering the best benefits and compensation, as rated anonymously by their employees.
Glassdoor, a company that compiles all sorts of statistics about businesses, compiled the list. This is the first year Glassdoor has ranked companies on pay and perks.
“The list is very tech-heavy, and it’s not surprising because when we do lists like that have anything to do with perks, benefits, compensation, the tech sector is always on the cutting edge of that world,” says Glassdoor Senior Vice President of People Allyson Willoughby.
Google’s software engineers make an average base salary of $128,000. At Apple, they make an average of $132,000, and at Facebook, $120,000.
“Google is kind of the thought leader when it comes to comp and benefits. Interestingly, No. 2 is Costco, which is definitely a surprise because you couldn’t think of two more different companies.”
Among the benefits for Google workers are free all-day meals to staffers, free bus service to work and bicycles to pedal around its complex. Google also pays for gender-reassignment surgery.
Costco offers its part-time employees the same insurance benefits as its full time employees, Willoughby says. Workers there also make hourly wages above those of other retail outlets.
Here are the 25 companies on the list:

- Epic Systems Corp.
- Intuit
