UPPER MARLBORO, Md. - A former D.C. police officer convicted in the deaths of his mistress and their baby daughter was sentenced Friday to two life terms in prison plus 20 years.
Richmond Phillips was sentenced in Prince George's County Circuit Court. He will not be eligible for parole.
"There is something evil about a man who can kill his own child, especially when he was sworn to protect us," Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks said in a statement. "Phillips is a disgrace to the uniform and the profession. He is a coward and a killer."
Phillips was convicted in January on two counts of first-degree murder and other crimes. He was arrested in June 2011 after police found Wynetta Wright dead in a Prince George's County park. Their 11-month-old child was found dead in a car parked nearby.
Prosecutors argued that Phillips killed Wright to avoid paying child support.
"This is a case that deeply affected this community and we are pleased that Mr. Phillips received the maximum sentence for his wretched conduct," Alsobrooks said.
