WASHINGTON – Several people have been killed while driving and walking along two miles of Pennsylvania Avenue in Prince George’s County.
The highway between Forestville and Silver Hill Roads connects District Heights, Forestville and Suitland . It doesn’t have continuous sidewalks and pedestrians have lost their lives.
“Pedestrians walk along the shoulders all the time and they’re in harm’s way,” says one man who frequently travels the roadway.
The Maryland State Highway Administration is conducting a $2.5 million study to explore the best ways to improve the stretch of highway.
Better street lighting, continuous sidewalks and narrower lanes are among the suggestions to make Pennsylvania Avenue safer, The Washington Post reports.
Special attention would be paid to Pennsylvania Avenue between Donnell Drive and Walters Lane. A lot of people cross there because it’s close to the Center at Forestville Shopping Center.
“They definitely need some sidewalks and some better lights because at night you can’t see anything,” says a teen who walks it daily.
There are more accidents in that stretch than in any other part of Pennsylvania Avenue from Forestville to Silver Hill Road because there’s so much pedestrian crossing.
