SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A “Breaking Bad” spinoff on Walter White’s shady attorney, “Better Call Saul,” will be filmed in Albuquerque, the New Mexico Film Office announced Wednesday.
In a statement, officials said that the TV series will be shot at Albuquerque Studios — which was home to the six-year run of “Breaking Bad” — and the production will employ at least 75 to 90 New Mexico crewmembers.
“We welcome this incredible production team back to the state,” said Nick Maniatis, director of the state’s film office. “They have proven to be excellent partners with the city of Albuquerque and the state of New Mexico.”
Mayor Richard Berry said the city enthusiastically welcomes back Sony and AMC-TV after the popularity of “Breaking Bad.” The show sparked tourism in Albuquerque as visitors sought popular sites from the show.
“Given the tremendous acclaim associated with Vince Gilligan’s productions, we are thrilled to learn that ‘Better Call Saul’ will be filmed in Albuquerque,” Berry said.
The new series will follow sleazy attorney Saul Goodman, played by Bob Odenkirk, as he defends drug lords, petty criminals and those allegedly injured in minor traffic accident.
“Breaking Bad,” which ended last year, followed former high school teacher Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston, producing methamphetamine with a former student, Jesse Pinkman, played by Aaron Paul.
Odenkirk played the pair’s attorney who came up with money-laundering schemes.
The network has created a website for the fictional lawyer, bettercallsaul.com, with Saul Goodman’s signature videos boasting how he can get anyone out of legal trouble.
