Amy Winehouse to be commemorated with statue

LONDON (AP) — Amy Winehouse is to be commemorated with a statue in the London neighborhood where she lived and worked.

The late singer’s family says the statue will be unveiled in Camden Town on Sept. 14, her 31st birthday.

The bronze likeness by Scott Eaton will stand in Camden’s bustling market, which draws tourists from around the world with its food, craft and clothing outlets and street performers.

It had initially been slated for outside the nearby Roundhouse concert hall. But the singer’s father, Mitch Winehouse, said Thursday that the new site would be more accessible for fans. He said that “now Amy will oversee the comings and goings of her home town forever.”

The beehived diva died at her Camden home in July 2011 from accidental alcohol poisoning. She was 27.
