Police: Medical Examiner Confirms Potomac Murder-Suicide

Montgomery County Police said a medical examiner has confirmed the wife of a local foundation director was shot to death before Chevy Chase resident Andrew Racca shot himself Tuesday in Potomac.

Police believe allegations of computer theft at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in Bethesda had something to do with Racca allegedly killing Mattingly. Mattingly’s husband Richard is the executive director of the foundation. Police don’t believe Racca and Carolyn Mattingly knew each other.

Police found Carolyn Mattingly’s body burned by a small fire allegedly set by Racca. Not far from Mattingly’s home, Racca was found dead with his car crashed into a tree.

The medical examiner determined Mattingly’s cause of death was homicide by gunshot wound and that Racca’s manner of death was suicide by gunshot wound. It’s still unclear whether Racca killed himself before or after crashing into the tree.
