The state’s annual tax-free shopping week is set for Sunday, Aug. 11 to Saturday, Aug. 17.
Shoppers will be spared Maryland’s 6 percent sales tax for clothing and shoes priced $100 or less.
The tax-free week started in 2007 and is set for the second week of August each year, just before the school year starts in order to give retailers a boost and back-to-school shoppers a bit of a break.
“All Maryland families have been impacted by the national recession and they deserve this annual tax break as they prepare to send their kids back to school,” said Comptroller Peter Franchot (D).
Each article of clothing or footwear that is $100 or less will be exempt from the tax, regardless of how many items you buy at the same time.
Businesses that don’t sell clothing or footwear can still sell items tax-free, but must pay the state sales tax out of pocket.
