Rwanda disqualification from African Cup upheld

CAIRO (AP) — African soccer’s governing body has upheld a decision to oust Rwanda from African Cup qualifying for using a player with different names and passports for club and international games.

The Confederation of African Football cited Rwanda for “fraud” in its weekend decision after hearing an appeal.

The African body said Rwanda’s federation knew about striker Dady Birori’s “double identity” but still allowed him to play. CAF said that while representing Rwanda, Birori was registered as Tady Etekiama and used a Congolese passport with his Congo club AS Vita.

Starting this week, Rwanda was replaced by Republic of Congo for the final round of qualifiers for the continent’s top tournament.
