I-270 cash-grabbers could face theft charges

WASHINGTON – Commuters turned to plunderers on Friday when an armored truck had a mishap and a bag of bills went flying.

The spoils were steep: Tens of thousands went flying, according to Maryland State Police. The majority of the loot has not been returned.

Drivers on northbound Interstate 270 hopped out of their cars for a money grab after the door of a GardaWorld armored truck malfunctioned shortly after 8 a.m. near Urbana, Maryland.

Now, state police are trying to figure out who took the money and convince them to return it.

“We understand the feeling that it may be theirs if they found it on the road, but the armored truck was parked off to the side right near where the money was dropped,” says Greg Shipley, a spokesman for Maryland State Police.

“I don’t think it was too hard to assume that that was (not the motorists’) money,” he says.

To date, only one person has come forward to return the money. A woman returned $1,180 in $20 bills, according to state police.

The swirling bills may have approximated a carnival game, but Shipley says this is serious business.

People who pocketed the booty could ultimately face theft charges, he says.
