ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Former President Bill Clinton is taking his wife’s place at a fundraiser for Maryland Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown.

In a statement Tuesday, Brown says he respects Hillary Rodham Clinton’s decision to cancel her appearance at his fundraiser to spend time with her daughter and new granddaughter, born Friday night. Brown also says he’s grateful that Bill Clinton is changing his schedule to travel to Potomac for the event.

The fundraiser is expected to raise more than $1 million for Brown’s campaign. The former president also attended a fundraiser for Brown in Potomac in May that raised more than $1 million for Brown.

Brown, a Democrat, is running against Republican Larry Hogan for Maryland governor.
