Ex-Md. governor’s grandson arrested in drug case

DENTON, Md. (AP) — The grandson of former Maryland Gov. Harry Hughes has been arrested on 20 drug and theft charges.

Andrew Douglas White of Denton is accused of stealing more than $250,000 from Hughes to fuel a heroin addiction over a two-year period.

Reached at home Wednesday, the 87-year-old Hughes says his grandson had permission to use his bank card and never stole anything.

White’s attorney didn’t immediately respond to a call for comment.

The Star Democrat of Easton reports (http://bit.ly/1p7jU5p) that the 26-year-old White was arraigned in Caroline County Circuit Court on Aug. 27 on charges of theft, obtaining property from a vulnerable adult, and possession and distribution of heroin.

He was released on $50,000 unsecured bond.

Court documents allege White got Hughes’ money by telling him he needed it for medical reasons.
