Speed limit on I-81 to increase near Winchester

WINCHESTER, Va. (AP) — The speed limit is going up on a section of Interstate 81 near Winchester.

Motorists soon will be able to drive 70 mph between mile markers 312.9 and 316.2. The current speed limit is 60 mph.

The Virginia Department of Transportation says the change will go into effect as soon as signs are installed. Weather permitting, signs will be installed beginning Wednesday.

The department says 57,000 to 62,000 vehicles travel the section in both directions each day.

VDOT spokesman Ken Slack tells The Winchester Star (http://bit.ly/1w7bJxh ) that the speed limit will remain 65 mph on another section of I-81 at the southern end of Frederick County in the Cedar Creek area.
