Suspect hurt in Roanoke officer-involved shooting

ROANOKE, Virginia (AP) — Police say a suspect has been hospitalized after an officer-involved shooting at a Roanoke retirement community building.

Roanoke County police spokeswoman Amy Whittaker tells The Roanoke Times (http://bit.ly/1qbK91l ) that police received a call around 11 p.m. reporting a “suspicious” person at the Health and Rehab Center of Friendship Retirement Community.

She says when officers arrived they encountered the suspect in the lobby and officers fired shots. Whittaker says it’s unknown whether the suspect was armed.

President and CEO of the facility Russ Barksdale told the newspaper he received a call about 11:30 p.m. about a problematic visitor that staff in the lobby were trying to “calm down.”

Barksdale tells the newspaper all residents and staff are safe.

Whittaker says the suspect was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment.
