Va. Beach mom sentenced for neglect in son’s death

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — A Virginia Beach woman has been sentenced to three years in prison for child neglect stemming from her infant son’s death.

Amanda Barrington pleaded guilty in March in Virginia Beach Circuit Court. The Virginian- Pilot (http://bit.ly/1lpEaRG ) reports that Barrington received the maximum sentence on Wednesday.

Judge William O’Brien called 13-month-old Devin Barrington Abbott’s death “a terrible, heinous act.”

The infant died on Nov. 26, 2012. An autopsy found dehydration, starvation and other contributing causes of death.

City social workers were investigating neglect complaints against Barrington before her son died. A city audit found that social workers didn’t conduct follow-up visits and didn’t test Barrington extensively for drugs.
