VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — Virginia Beach will pay nearly $17,000 to a disabled former resident as part of a compliance agreement with the federal government.
The city also will train its Housing and Neighborhood Preservation staff on the 1973 Rehabilitation Act, and review or revise policies governing how it makes accommodations for people with disabilities.
The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/1oMVlzy ) says it obtained city documents regarding the agreement through the state Freedom of Information Act.
The newspaper says the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development ruled in February that the city had violated the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act. The department said the city failed to make accommodations for Maude Turner in a government housing program.
City Manager Jim Spore signed the agreement last month. The city didn’t admit fault.
