BALTIMORE (AP) — Workers at Johns Hopkins Hospital have been rallying for higher pay at the esteemed medical center.
A union representing 2,000 service workers at the hospital held a rally Saturday. Some workers say they rely on food stamps to make ends meet and live in poverty, despite having jobs.
Actor Danny Glover and “The Wire’s” Wendell Pierce joined the rally and spoke to the crowd. Pierce says workers at the world’s greatest hospital should be paid a living wage.
Pamela Paulk, the hospital’s vice president of human resources, says wages for surgical techs, cooks and housekeepers are already higher than the minimum wage increased just approved in Maryland. She says the hospital looks forward to returning to negotiations with the union.
Employees went on strike for three days last month.
