Mix cherry blossoms, warm weather for blooming Metro ridership

WASHINGTON – Metro saw its highest Saturday ridership since 2010 this weekend thanks to warm weather and the cherry blossom parade.

Riders took more than 638,000 trips Saturday – the highest on Metrorail since the Rally to Restore Sanity in October 2010 when more than 825,000 trips were taken. Ridership was almost double average Saturday rates.

Sunday was also a busy day on Metro. Riders took more than 405,000 trips, 83 percent higher than a typical Sunday.

Cherry blossom visitors are encouraged to avoid the Smithsonian station, which is usually crowded during the cherry blossom season. Other options include L’Enfant Plaza, Federal Triangle and Arlington Cemetery.

This was the final weekend for the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

MARC trains and Capital Bikeshare also saw heavy usage during the weekend.
